Week 4 - Number Talks

I am a YouCubed follower and love to learn how to get kids to explain their thinking about math rather than giving the number. Number flexibility is a great way for you and your child to talk about how you got to an answer. This is good for adding, subtracting, multiplication and division.

"The video below shows an example of Kristina doing a number talk at home with her kids. (You will need to go here to see the video: https://www.youcubed.org/resources/number-talks-all-ages-video/ ) They wrote down their solutions, but you can just chat about them over the dinner table. We are also including here a few links to a variety of number talk resources that are usually for the classroom, but you might enjoy. In the video from the online course, you can see some great visual connections!"

I watched this video 5 years ago and it made me change the way I think about math. Also, it helped me to realize that we can all have a different way of coming up with an answer! I found out that my thinking was not always the teacher's way and that was okay! Maybe even better. This way of talking about numbers and seeing different ways we arrive at an answer set me free!

I hope this helped you to have fun with math!
